Dullness, prostration
Morphologic diagnosis: 
Subcutaneous tissue: Severe acute multifocal to coalescing hemorrhage with diffuse edema
Clinical description: 
Hock joint with severe subcutaneous hemorrhages. An incision was made to expose the accumulation of subcutaneous serous exudate.
Pathologic description: 
The subcutaneous tissues contain numerous, irregularly shaped, well demarcated, coalescing red areas which can be seen through the scales of the leg. An incision is present on the left side of the image revealing that the subcutaneous tissue of the hock is expanded by clear, gelatinous fluid.

History: 
The photograph was taken 5 days post inoculation. The bird was experimentally inoculated with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus on 3/2/08 at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. The inoculation was performed in the caudal thoracic air sac with strain A/CK/PA/469/3-84/H5N2, using 0.25ml.
