Conjunctiva: hemorrhages.
Clinical description:
This image was taken 4 days post experimental inoculation with viscerotropic velogenic Newcastle disease virus. Externally, this infected chicken had periocular edema. Here, the conjunctiva has been exposed through an incision to demonstrate the severe subconjunctival hemorrhages associated with the external lesions. There are aggregates of lymphoid tissue present in the conjunctiva of the bird, making this region a target for NDV replication.
