Morphologic diagnosis:
Subcutaneous tissue (ventral body): Moderate acute diffuse edema. Pectoral muscle and fat: Mild multifocal acute hemorrhages.
Clinical description:
This image was taken 3 days post experimental inoculation with highly pathogenic avian influenza. Detailed view of the subcutaneous edema over the keel and hemorrhages within the pectoral muscles.
Pathologic description:
The skin overlying the keel has been reflected caudally to reveal that the subcutaneous tissues overlying the keel are a wet, gelatinous and expanded by clear, yellow fluid. Additionally, there are multiple, variably sized, poorly demarcated dark red foci within the pectoral muscles and in the fat overlying the keel.
