Morphologic diagnosis:
Comb: Marked hemorrhage and congestionComb: Focal ulcer (incidental finding)
Clinical description:
Day 2 post inoculation. The bird is found dead. Detailed view of the comb. There is moderate swelling of the comb and severe ecchymotic lesions.
Pathologic description:
The entire comb is swollen and dark red. Additionally, there is a small scab over a sunken area on the dorsal edge of the comb (not related to AI)

History:
This photograph was taken 2 days post inoculation. The bird was experimentally inoculated with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus on 3/2/08 at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. The inoculation was performed in the caudal thoracic air sac with strain A/CK/PA/469/3-84/H5N2, using 0.25ml.
