Clinical description: 
This image was taken 1 day post experimental inoculation. This bird has a marked decreased in activity level and is exhibiting general depression. Mild facial cellulitis and blepharoconjunctivitis can be seen. The comb has been trimmed however moderate inflammation of the comb and wattles can still be appreciated. Swelling of the structures of the head is due to subcutaneous edema. The feather loss is due to normal molting.
Pathologic description: 
The subcutaneous tissues of the head are swollen. The eyelids are thickened, causing them not to open all the way. The wattle and comb are bright red and the comb is slightly swollen. The feather loss is due to normal molting and the blue feathers are due to marker dye used to identify the bird during the experiment.

History: 
The photograph of this bird was taken 1 day post inoculation. The bird was experimentally inoculated with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus on 3/2/08 at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. The inoculation was performed in the caudal thoracic air sac with strain A/CK/PA/469/3-84/H5N2, using 0.25ml.
