Cecal tonsils: necrosis.
Clinical description: 
This image was taken 5 days post experimental inoculation with viscerotropic velogenic Newcastle disease virus. Necrosis of lymphoid tissue at the cecal tonsils, as seen here, and throughout the intestinal walls is used to help distinguish viscerotropic from neurotropic strains of Newcastle disease in the field.

History: 
The photograph of this bird was taken 5 days post inoculation. The bird was experimentally inoculated with Viscerotropic Velogenic Newcastle Disease virus [MO/31387/96] on 3/2/08 at Plum Island Animal Disease Center. The inoculation was performed via cloacal swab using 0.1ml.
